Laser Protection Adviser was recently invited to deliver laser safety awareness training at a dedicated training day for one of Ireland’s largest hospital groups. The session supported clinical, surgical and technical teams who work around laser and light based systems, giving them clear guidance on safe operation, risk control and governance requirements.

The training aligned with the Artificial Optical Radiation Directive and the expectations set out in EN 60825 14 and MHRA Laser Guidance. It also helped staff understand their responsibilities within the hospital’s wider laser safety programme. Because hospitals operate multiple laser systems across different specialties, structured awareness training is one of the most practical actions you can implement to strengthen compliance and reduce risk.

Our training covered core principles including laser physics, hazard awareness, correct use of PPE, environment controls, signage, record keeping and the role of the Laser Protection Adviser. We also discussed how clinical teams, Estates and Clinical Engineering can work together to maintain a safe and compliant service.
